3 Reasons Why Chicago is Perfect for Travelers

Love to travel?

Chicago is a gateway for the travel curious!

Our city is made for weekend wanderers and summer strollers alike. Not only is it well-situated, with access to beaches and funky neighborhoods, it's also a transportation hub, whether you want to fly or ride.

Because getaways come in all shapes and sizes, from lazy afternoons to week-long excursions, here are three ways to escape, whether you have serious vacation time or just one afternoon.

1. Chicago Neighborhoods are Excellent for Hyper-Local Midweek Adventures: Pick a neighborhood you’ve never been to (or one you love but want to see more of) and choose one to-do: an art gallery, museum, or a quiet park. Then pick one must-have treat (pierogies, mango lassi, or the perfect croissant). Then let the sidewalks lead you. No agenda (or passport) required, but bring your walking shoes!

2. Chicago is Perfectly Situated For Getting Outdoors: Need to breathe and be surrounded by green space? Want a day or a weekend without summer traffic and city noise? Pick a direction, then pick a halfway spot. Getting there is half the fun. Some suggestions:

  • North → Lake Bluff + a stop at The Chocolate Sanctuary in Gurnee
  • West → Starved Rock + a halfway bite at The Cheese Store of Geneva
  • Whihala Beach in Whiting, Indiana + a stop at Flamingo’s Grille in Lansing
3. Use the City as Your Launch Pad: You don't need to plan too far ahead when you're at the center of it all. Catch a last minute deal on flights from Midway or O’Hare or take the train. Amtrak is the answer for effortless weekend excursions that feel like a real getaway (think Indianapolis, Minneapolis, or St. Louis). For short day trips, Metra offers easy access to the surrounding suburbs.

Metra Pro-tip: travel opposite the morning commuters and check out walkable places like historic Geneva Station or the Naperville Riverwalk.
